Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams as a microblogging platform that would allow its users to send short, 140-character messages, known as "tweets." The first tweet was sent by Dorsey on March 21, 2006, and said simply, "just setting up my twttr."
The early days of Twitter were marked by slow but steady growth; by 2007, the site had around 60,000 active users.
